The Ultraman Blazar 4-disc Box Set will be the first chance any of us get to own Ultraman Blazar the Movie: Tokyo Kaiju Showdown on Blu-Ray. This is essential for any collector and really any Ultra-fan.
Ultraman Blazar is known for its high production quality, carrying on the legacy of its Tokusatsu predecessors with unmatched SFX, ambitious camerawork, and insane miniature sets.
The series explores the interpersonal relationships and individual stories of each member of SKaRD, like Episode 20, “Night of Insects Crying”, in which vice-captain Teruaki must deal with his father, who has fallen ill, all while a colony of insectoid Zugugan mercilessly attack the small village he hails from.
There’s also Episode 10 “Parent and Child”, in which Gento and his son, Jun, must grapple with the emotional nuances of understanding kaiju as living beasts who have many of the same basic principles as humans, while facing off against Demaaga.
Some episodes are just downright hilarious, like number 6 “The Invading Aurora”, in which an alien Cannan named Herbie uses an Aurora beam to turn machinery on Earth sentient, to the surprise of Yasunobu, who has a… personal relationship with his favorite washing machine.
And of course, some episodes are instant classics for the action and pacing alone. The very first episode, “First Wave”, introduces us to Captain Gento and Blazar while Tokyo is under the dire threat of the Space Kaiju Bazanga. The show’s polished look and science-fiction-military atmosphere are quickly established and Blazar is revealed as the wild-man of Ultras!
Ultraman Blazar already has a cinematic visual language and the budget to support it, yet Ultraman Blazar the Movie: Tokyo Kaiju Showdown brings the already impressive features to a whole new level.
In HD Blu-Ray and DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 we can relive the assembly of the SKaRD team and once again revel in the synergy of Gento, Emi, Anri, Yasunobu, Teruaki and of course, Earth Garon, as they assemble against a mysterious adversary.
Picking up after the final fight in the series, Captain Gento and SKaRD face off against an onslaught of giant monsters emerging from factories owned by Kaiju research and chemical facility Necromass Co.
As they investigate Necromass, Emi and Gento find that company CEO Mabuse, has been developing a mysterious compound called Damudoxin. The investigation is halted when self-proclaimed universal overlord, Alien Damuno, threatens Mabuse to destroy the Damudoxin and all his research, lest hijacked GGF missiles be unleashed onto Tokyo.
When Mabuse obeys, Damudoxin spills from the shattered tanks and merges with dead kaiju to create the terrifying Gongilgan, the Demonic Carcass. SKaRD and Ultraman Blazar go toe-to-toe with Taganular, Zugugan, Gongiligan, and discover the truth behind Alien Damuno’s conquest of earth.
Ultraman Blazar the Movie: Tokyo Kaiju Showdown explores the effects of greed and turning a blind eye to what matters in a society that prioritizes careerism. It’s also a quick-paced adventure full of wild fun. Tokyo Kaiju Showdown is a spectacle and a culmination of everything unique and exciting about the Ultraman Blazar series.
There’s nothing better than watching Tokyo Kaiju Showdown to cap off a long Ultraman Blazar binge session. It’s literally what the series was made for. The Mill Creek 4 Disc Ultraman Blazar boxset is the best quality way to watch all things Blazar so make sure to add it to your collection, and stay tuned for more reviews here at Ultraman Connection!
